The West Town Museum of Cultural History was founded in 1995 by Northica H. Stone and was made to be the “cultural self-help expression of Operation UPLIFT, Inc.” Our mission is to preserve, share, and educate the community about the rich and often forgotten history of Maywood. We believe that archives help foster a sense of community pride and connection for generations.

The Museum highlights the story and history of the 1869 founders of Maywood, Colonel William T. Nichols, and the first black residents, including the Hurst Family of Maywood. Through our collection, we uplift Black History as an essential part of Maywood and American history.

The West Town Museum also conducts cultural and historic research. The museum’s first curator, Jeri Stenson and Northica H. Stone, uncovered “the lost secret of Maywood’s underground railroad,” bringing attention to the Village’s role in the fight for freedom.

West Town works to preserve its history through oral histories, photographs, cultural tours, and artifacts, including textiles, and is guided by volunteers who have historical ties to the community. The Museum currently holds 10 collections ranging from topics featuring Heritage in Africa, Early Maywood settlers, Arts and sports, and more.
